Sapere Bio (formerly HealthSpan Diagnostics) was founded in 2013 by Dr. Norman "Ned" Sharpless and Dr. Natalia Mitin based on research from Dr. Sharpless' lab at the Lineberger Cancer Center, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Dr. Sharpless' lab was a pioneer in the discovery of mechanisms of aging and predicted the role of senescence in human aging and chronic diseases. Pivotal work from his lab demonstrated a dual role for p16, a marker and regulator of senescence, in tumor suppression and aging.

Building on this knowledge, Sapere Bio has developed a series of products based on immune aging biomarkers, including p16. Our aim is to change the way aging is measured and utilized in clinical decision-making.
Dr. Sharpless recently completed his tenure as Director of the National Cancer Institute, and Dr. Mitin leads Sapere Bio.
